Working closely with DoC we have a limited number of Takahe that are successfully breeding inside the wire. We have them in our heavily protected Sea Bird site, and they have a very high breeding success rate and ongoing survival rate. The warmer climate compared to other Takahe locations may be the reason for this success.
Our ongoing rabbit problem meant that we translocated two pairs of Takahe in 2019 to allow us to deal with the rabbits without putting the Takahe at risk. We hope to be able to return these birds to the Cape at some point before the breeding season of 2020.
