Juvenile Tuatara at the Cape

Our Tuatara population has increased steadily inside the heavily protected seabird sight, with some spreading outside the site. They appear to enjoy the Cape’s climate and habitat, breeding prolifically.

We have the capacity to have a much larger population of Tuatara as there is plenty of safe habitat available for them. They prefer full sun in the day but with plenty of cover for security, so we expect that as our trees mature the population will continue to increase significantly.

The number of juveniles means we are able to offer Tuatara for translocation to other sanctuaries around New Zealand.
