SHore PLover

Captive Management

Cape Sanctuary has been actively engaged in the Shore Plover recovery program following the build of the Kotahi Aviary in 2018. Shore Plover are a critically endangered species of shore birds, with an estimated population of ~200 birds, captive management programs are essential to the specie’s survival. Following the devastation and associated rebuilt of the Kotahi aviary after cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, Cape Sanctuary donated all facilities for the Department of Conservation to manage. Birds returned to the aviary in August 2023. Cape Sanctuary remains an active and engaged partner in the Shore Plover recovery project.
